DHAKA – Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on Tuesday said New Delhi wants to build a positive, constructive and forward-looking relationship with Dhaka.
Speaking at a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi, Jaiswal was asked about bilateral relations amid Bangladesh’s growing engagement with China and Pakistan.
“As far as India’s relations with Bangladesh are concerned, as I have mentioned earlier, we want to build a positive, constructive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh,” he said.
“This is our expectation, and we are committed to working towards that objective,” he added.
Asked about the ongoing protests by garment workers in Bangladesh, Jaiswal said India was monitoring the situation.
“There have been developments there and we continue to follow those developments,” he said.
On Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s possible visit to India, the spokesperson said New Delhi had already extended an invitation to him.
“We’ve already extended an invitation to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to visit India. And we have already invited and we’ll see,” he said.
Responding to questions about transit and the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, Jaiswal referred to the Joint Rivers Commission, describing it as the structured mechanism for discussions on cross-border rivers, including the Ganges.
“That is the structured mechanism for discussion on all cross-boundary rivers, including the Ganga. As far as any further development in that regard is concerned, I have no update to share with you,” he said.
